You will usually find a database of drivers on the manufacturer's website. Most manufacturers include this database in the Support section, while others include it in the Downloads section. Almost all manufacturers take good care of their database and make it as accessible as possible. NOT LG! Their database of drivers is a total mess!

Monitors are vital parts of any computer configuration. Without a monitor, you are unable to see what you are doing, you are unable to watch movies, navigate the Internet, etc. This is obvious. Monitors come in different shapes and sizes and have different features. Advanced LCD monitors have numerous features to help them produce top quality images. For example, my monitor, a LG W2042TQ-BF has 2ms GTG Lightning Fast Response Time, Clear Vision, DFC (Digital Fine Contrast ratio) 8000:1, FLATRON f-Engine, 4:3 in Wide, etc. You can see it below:

However, complex monitors come with their own errors. Although rare, these errors are still present. Here are just a few errors encountered by real people:

What would you do if you would encounter these problems? Try to fix them yourself, of course! Why pay an IT expert for a job that you can do yourself? Let's see what the problem is and how we can solve it!

First of all, let's detect the problem. Go to your desktop and right click on it (not on an icon!). Select Properties and go to the Settings tab. Here is how mine looks like (I have been experiencing some strange problems lately and I think they are related to my monitor):

As you can see in the image, Windows is unable to see my monitor type or manufacturer. For the operating system, it is just a Default Monitor. This means that certain advanced options or features could be unavailable. Moreover, some of these can cause errors. To fix this problem, we need to download and install the latest drivers for our LG monitor.

Finding and downloading the latest drivers for the LG monitor

You will usually find a database of drivers on the manufacturer's website. Most manufacturers include this database in the Support section, while others include it in the Downloads section. Almost all manufacturers take good care of their database and make it as accessible as possible. NOT LG! Their database of drivers is a total mess! This tells something about customer care doesn't it? It took me almost an hour to manage to download and install the driver right before I started writing this tutorial.

Anyway, let's start by going to LG's main page at www.ca.lge.com. You can also search for "LG Canada" on Google and the first result is the page we are looking for. The page itself is clean and fast:

LG main page

You will immediately notice the link to the Support section at the top of the page. So far so good. Click on the link to reach the following page:

On this page, the first impulse would be to click the TV/Audio/Video category in the middle of the page. Wrong! We should click on Software Upgrades at the left of the page. A very "intuitive" system. Here is how the next page looks like:

We must choose the Product and Operating System. For most manufacturers, this would be enough. Not for LG. If you click Search you will get a lot of rubbish. The thing that is missing is the word "driver" in the Subject. Here is how the page looks after I filled it:

Now we can click Search if we want to find something useful. Here is what the search engine returned:

This page even confused me! Well, there are 4 subjects here. After taking the third look, you notice that the first subject is the one that should contain ALL the drivers for ALL of LG's monitors. I have tried the other 3 categories and, believe me, you don't want to start downloading anything from there. Now the tricky part. The file we need is in the File Name category. Although it is not separated in any way from the rest of the files (the last two are exactly the same anyway), the file is "LG MNT Drivers(080609).zip". Click on it and you should see the download window:

Choose Save File and Click OK. Select an easy to remember location on your hard drive and download it. And here comes the amazing part. When you go to the file to open it, you realize that nothing opens the file. The EXPERTS at LG forgot to place the extension (which is .rar). Right click the file and click Rename. Type LG.rar and save it like this.

Now that we are finally able to open the file, extract the contents in a folder of your choice. When you browse through the folder, find the W2042 subfolder and open it. You will see that there is not executable file. To install the monitor, follow the instructions below to the letter:

Restart your computer and you should see your model in the Display Properties-Settings tab. Congratulations! You have just installed the latest hardware drivers for your LG monitor. You should not experience any errors or crashes from now on!
